VT1300 - Communication Design

the (un)official site to help you survive your first design course. really.

Collect printed design pieces

Collect five (5) advertisements, brochures, invitations, magazines, or similar printed materials that stand out to you in some way. Be sure to vary your sources (read: each must be from a different source). If the material is not something you can take, use a digital camera to capture the design (where legally permissible). In written form, discuss the following for each item: What message did it communicate? Was the ad (or piece) effective? What caught your attention? What did you like about it? What elements did you dislike? Are there things you would change about it? Why? How well does it communicate a message to buy goods or services? Does it have a sense of discovery or is it clever in some way?

You will be expected to hand in your five (5) items to me in a form that I can easily peruse and evaluate (hard copy). This should be typed and include your name and class.

Believe it or not, this is not just for the sake of busy work. This exercise to to help you (a) realize that design is going on all around you and (b) train you eyes to start seeing elements of design.
