Khoi Vinh takes a minute on his site Subtraction to discuss his policies on taking influence vs. inspiration (remember that conversation?):
The problem is that there’s such a blurry line between plagiarism and emulation that it becomes difficult to make unequivocal judgments on any given design that might bear some resemblance to mine. [...] That’s what’s most important to me: that the design not simply be an instance of paraphrasing my design ideas, but that it’s a product of your own ideas. That’s how we all learn.
Give the whole article a read for some great perspective on where to draw the line during your creative process.

Check out the redesign of TIME Magazine, as well as Will Ferrell’s hair. Crazy. Anyway, the article does a great job of explaining the “whys” of the redesign. That crazy conscious thought - we just hoped it was a fad!

Take one minute and 52 seconds to get some perspective on typefaces. See the video here. Background on the typeface Helvetica can be found here. Details on the Helvetica documentary can be found here. All reports from SxSWi point to this being a great film. But that’s beside the point.

Ted over at NorthTemple.com again graces us with lessons learned from the Tooth Fairy. It’s his daughter’s second go around dealing with this mythical beast and things aren’t all smooth sailing in Ted-land.
She had very high hopes, given her prior experience with the magical exchange of a worthless discarded tooth for three shiny quarters. She went to bed with great anticipation, her tooth tucked into a ziplock baggie under her pillow. The next lesson: Prior experience sets expectations.
You know the drill by now - give the article a read and be ready to discuss when we next meet. How do the lessons Ted presents here jive/conflict with what we’ve discussed thus far in terms of dealing with our clients?

Typies has a great write-up on many of the characteristics of type. This article doesn’t point out “rights” and “wrongs” but rather illustrates the differences between characteristics.
Today, I want to take time to analyze how to choose a correct text typography design in different cases. It is very important to understand that those tips are not conclusive, but they can be a good help at the moment of choosing a text type. In any case, it depends on what do you want to transmit with this type, because many times legibility is as much important as the character of the type.
Since we’ve begun to look at type in class, you will want to go ahead and give the article a look here. Remember, at this point we are simply trying to get our eyes to see the various nitty-gritty details.

Well, remember that conversation we had last night about Duncan’s article (where he posits that Adobe is hurting its Photoshop brand by adding other pieces of software to the brand umbrella)? Well, Adobe has upped the ante yet again.
Adobe will expand its Photoshop product line in Spring 2007, to better meet the needs of its users. There will soon be two editions of Photoshop® CS3 software for both the Macintosh and Windows platforms: Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended.
Ideal for film, video, and multimedia professionals and graphic and web designers using 3D and motion, as well as professionals in engineering and science, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended software delivers everything in Photoshop CS3 and more. Render and incorporate 3D images into your 2D composites. Stop time with easy editing of motion graphics on video layers. And probe your images with measurement, analysis, and visualization tools. For all that is the professional standard in digital imaging and more, choose Photoshop CS3 Extended.
