VT1300-50: Communication Design

the (un)official site to help you survive your first design course. really.

Thanks

August 21st, 2007 by J

To all that showed up for class last night and participated: thanks. I know that we covered a metric ton of information, some minutia and some foundational stuff, and it was a lot to take in. I enjoyed meeting you all and hope to learn some names soon (no promises, though).

To summarize the things I’ve asked you to for next week’s class:

  • look over this site and get familiar with the syllabus
  • get the class book if you don’t already have it and be sure NOT to open it yet
  • be sure to get your RSS reader loaded up for assignment 1

As this site is setup all bloggy style, I’d like you to drop me a comment to this post so you know how to do it. Comments allow you to communicate with me and your comments may help others who are reading the site. They further the conversation.

Leave a comment by hitting the “No Comments >>” link or “x Comments >>” link at the bottom of a post. Or, simply click the headline for the post and scroll to the comment fields.

I hope to see you all on Thursday.

J- Tonight was kind of overwhelming but I am excited to see what is to come. Hope I did this comment thing right.
    Thanks!

  2. J Says:

Katie: Just hang in there and you’ll do fine. The overwhelming thing ebbs after a few classes.

J- Your class seems like it will be a lot of fun. It’s a huge difference to my other business class, wanting-to-sleep wise anyway.

    J,
Thanks for a great intro to the class. I do have a question: what exactly are we’re looking for in these sites? Some of the messages seem to apply to us, while others are more “bloggish.” What should we be looking for?
    Thanks again.

Amber - you’re quite right: some of the stuff from the sites I’ve asked you to subscribe to will be quite irrelevant. However, these are just a few of the leaders in the industry. From time to time, they will post something that is so terribly pertinent to this class it is scary. Other times, they will briefly discuss something from someone else’s site and one such as myself would hope that the seeds of curiosity would be strong enough for you to click through.

That is to say, this is more about self discovery than relevancy at times. But bear with me; I think over time it will pay off.

An example: a few months back Jason posted on his experiences navigating the London underground system. His observations about that system, as well as the faults he finds, are terrifically applicable to the kind of thinking this class is trying to promote. I’m not really interested in his answers to the questions (if he indeed provides any). I’m much more interested that you see the kinds of questions that he asks.
