In the mouth of two or three witnesses…
The process is simple, says Massimo. “It’s a matter of discipline, and it starts by looking at the problem and collecting all the available information about it. If you understand the problem, you have the solution. It’s really more about logic than imagination.” (emphasis added)
This is a super quick article but well worth the read:

Adrian Shaughnessy over at Design Observer has an interesting read on empathy in the field of design:
I’ve sacked a few clients in my time, but I’ve persevered with countless others who deserved to be dumped. And the reason I persevered with them was because I could see their point of view even when they were behaving unreasonably. Empathy in design leads to harmony and professional accord, perhaps even to riches. It’s an essential part of the job. But it’s also responsible for lots of mediocrity and formulaic design solutions.
I’m not sure where I come down on all of this. I agree up to a point. But that’s just me. Give the whole article and tell me what you think.

A quick thank you to those that made the effort to attend the talk give by Cameron Moll @ SUU last night. I thought it was a great chance to hear one of the influential designers of the day in person.
Also, a public thank you to SUU and Cameron for allowing us Dixie folk to come. Much appreciated.
For those that took off before the bitter end, the slides from the presentation can be found here. And while poking around his site this morning, I found this, which seems to be an early iteration of the talk we heard last night. Worthy reading (and listening) for sure.
(BTW - don’t forget to send me an email detailing how the topics covered might affect you as a new designer if you want those, um, not-really-extra-credit-because-I-don’t-believe-in-extra-credit points.)

Hey all. As I mentioned in class last night, the talk given by Cameron is on and the details listed are correct. When I spoke with SUU yesterday, they mentioned that the place will probably be packed and we should get there early to get a seat.
Also, I have a waiver you are supposed to sign. Here’s the bulk of it, and by posting it here in public view I expect that you hold to it:
I understand that I am legally an adult and responsible for my personal conduct. I also understand that when I elect to make private transportation arrangements, I do so knowing and agreeing that I will be personally responsible for my own safety. By electing private transportation, I elect out of any coverage or responsibility that Dixie State College may have had for death, harm or damage to me or my property, and in so electing, I release and waive any claims I, or my heirs, may have or have had against my coach, Dixie State College, and the State of Utah, or any of their officers, agents and/or employees for any death, harm or damage which I may suffer in traveling to or from this activity or at any time while on the trip.
If I elect to take my private vehicle and transport other students at their election, I understand that the insurance on my private vehicle will be the sole source of coverage for me and my passengers, and that if it is in any way inadequate to cover any death, harm or damage, that I will be solely and personally liable without recourse whatsoever against Dixie State College, the State of Utah or any of their officers, agents and/or employees.
Gotta love the legal stuff, no? Anyway, here’s the waiver. Print it,sign it, and bring it with you. Please.

A great quote to start the week from the latest Airbag post:
All of my best employees were the best not because of where they went to school or because they had a lot of prior experience. They were the best because they had the ambition to learn new skills, methods, applications, etc.
Hear hear.

For those of you who missed class last week, a friendly reminder: the midterm is tomorrow (10/23) during class. Come prepared with you assignments ready to submit, a pen and/or writing utensil of your choosing, and perhaps some extra paper.
And, since we went over what would be on the midterm as a class on Thursday, if you missed this review session you may want to find a buddy and get the skinny from them. Use bribery as necessary.

Those of you that would like to talk about setting up a carpool to SUU for next week can use the comments to do so. You know -someone offers to drive, someone offers to be driven, etc.
